Assin People also known as Asin, or Asen People are part of the Akan ethnic group and can be found in Central Region of Present-day Ghana they are related to the Fanti People and others part of the Akan ethnic group.
According to Anthropologist it is believed Assin People and other Akans migrated from the Sahara desert of Sahel region into the forested region around the 11th Century. It is claimed they started in the Eastern Region of Africa where the ethnogenesis as they know others claimed they originally came from the north then crossed Kemet present day Egypt. They settled in Southern Nubia present day Southern Sudan around 500 AD and later moved west established small kingdoms around 750 AD- 1200 AD.
The Assin Manso Ancestral River park apart from the numerous forts and castle along the shores, there is a significance of the former slave market and slave cemetery at the north of Cape Coast, in 1807 the Assin fugitives arrived at Cape Coast expecting to find protection, but on a contrary the British governor Colonel John Torrane seized the Assin Chief called Chebboo an old firm and it is claimed he delivered him to the Ashanti at Annoabu where he was claimed to be sentenced with the excruciating torture.
Assin was an Akan state that existed in Cape Coast according to Anthropologist Reindorf, the origin of their names such as Wasen meaning numerically surpassing the site they can occupied on the right bank of the Pra. We celebrate many festivals, one of the festival which took place in 1992 was the Pan African Festival known as PANAFEST. It is celebrated in honor of Africans and people of Africans descent visit the painful past toll and to celebrate music and performance as well.
